THE STORY OF THE KERRY COW

A poignant portrait of a rare animal native to Ireland. Ireland’s association with the Kerry cow goes back thousands of years, cows had an integral place in Irish society and we see this in ancient Irish legends such as The Cattle-raid of Cooley.
The Kerry cow is the oldest cow in existence in Europe and provides a living, breathing link with the past. In today’s globalised system she is displaced and as a result, sadly endangered.

BACKGROUND

Mieke Vanmechelen began to research this project while she was Kerry Filmmaker in Residence during 2017. Filming commenced in January until May/June 2019. Born in Belgium in 1974, Mieke moved to Ireland as a child in 1981. Growing up on a hill farm in the Caha mountains, her appreciation and understanding of rural life has gone on to influence how she approaches her practice as an artist.
As a farmer herself, with a strong interest in conservation, she is the current President of the Kerry Cattle Society.
